What is BASE?

What lead us to walk where the ground ends and jump into the void???

Or rather, sometimes the wrong questions are asked and we hope for ready answers, but the complex game of life, we pass between simplicity and complexity and poetic and sensitive issues that cannot be expressed in lines, videos, rationally.

Deeply, we actually explain what is being BASE jumper because it is impossible to be in the shoes of another. In fact it is a very recent and complex sport that requires the practitioner a range of expertise, amount of diverse knowledge. The jump begins within us. In a call. In feel ready, in the view, in understanding the various levels of challenges to be conquered for it to happen the jump. The jump continues in packing, attention, and focus on the technical knowledge needed to know where will jump so your packjob will suit the situation.

The next step – simultaneously – is to know the location of the jump: condition of the environment, temperature, wind, obstacles, the height of the object, of all that you have to learn about the place you will jump. The challenge of arriving at each location, with 8kg in the back. Since taking an elevator to walk for 3 hours in thick jungle, climb an antenna, each object has its own peculiarity and every step toward fore requires something of us, within us.

One thing is certain: you can not climb a 100m antenna thinking about the fight you had with your boyfriend. This necessary presence makes the practice of BASE very spiritual for me. I feel every inch of my body, my breath, my heart. Effort, through the breath, lower my heart rate. I am present and connected with the world.

I feel network. At that moment, I’m on the network.

My first building was in Mexico in Guadalajara, apart from my closest friends. I, alone in the spotlight, in a strange country, I felt all that was learned during this preparation in each cell.

I felt Ruy, my mentor and close friend, said about body position, object analysis, relax, enjoy, look at the landscape, which is always gorgeous up there. I felt Keds asking me to look at the wind, I felt Rafa telling me not to put my hands on the risers, felt Caco telling me to drive better with the fingers out. I felt everything in the complexity of space-time in fractions of seconds that go unnoticed in soil.

In 2011 I had the opportunity to go to Europe and meet people from all over the world.

Being BASE jumper is to be a family. I no longer have a vision of sport as romantic as I had at the beginning, after all every family has problems, is done by humans and their virtues and desvirtudes. BASE is more than a sport. It’s a way of life, is a form of spiritual stroll that our mortal and ephemeral earthly existence.

It is a choice, not veiled contained risk, but that tends to be increasingly secure, and has only one way to improve the sport: jumping, listening, packing, giving up heels, relying on intuition, traveling, being, and thanking. Being in this family, to find amazing people along the way that change everything and make the problems become small, that everything in life flow better.

I feel love in every cell. This is the only thing that matters: how much love we share with the world. Facing the paths and each is berlins be in love. Because when we are in extreme situations, we know who we are, we know more and appreciate what really needs to be valued.

I think if the world practice BASE jumping … there would have no wars. In the exit point there is no color, no race, no religion or gender.

In 2015, along with Julia Botelho , Patricia Porto and Rita Birindelli , under the direction of Michel Coeli , we recorded a documentary and a series of 13 episodes for the Channel Off call Base Jump Girls trying to bring this sensitive and intense view about the Sport through the eyes of women practicing this sport.
